With technology speeding up, more and more young people to use the Internet, but old people have a little chance to be exposed.In what way could mobile phones and the Internet be useful to old people? How can old people be encouraged to use this new technology?
Cutting-edge technology directly influences people around the world; such as the Internet, mobile phone.Young generations use them for recreation and studying, even to contact with friend by the Internet, but old people seems have an isolation from the new technology. In this essay, i will point out some advantages of  the cyberspace,and some ideas that encourage old people to use the Internet.
In this generation, people are effected by the Internet and phones, because some of these spin-offs are good for people.In the Internet this respect, some of the Internet application are useful and interesting,which can better our life quality and fun. For example, the news and games, people can use the Internet to get the most up-to-date information,even to the minute. Besides, when people feel unpleasant or blue,so mobile phone's game can please people and makes them feel better. 
To encouraged ideas, it is vividly the old people have an isolation from the technology explosion, but we can encourage them in some special ways. Using to the online application can motivate them. Take online chatting for example.There is a child who live a great distance away from home, but old people can use online chatting to connect with family,both on the Internet and mobile phones. Furthermore, alerting function is another advantages to old people. For instance, as people are getting older, their  brain functions are more slowly.Alerting function can warn them to remember when they should eat the medicine or the things should be done. 
To concluded,the more we accelerate the pace of life , the more life satisfaction we have. Although the old people are not easy to adapt to the new trend, we still can give them some motivation to try.

     While it is true that the world in which we live is technology driven, we can not force our older community to get on board. Instead, we may try offering our older generation a different solution. Or even better, meeting them halfway. As an educator, it behooves me when I see children who can not write a letter.
     It is an old saying that each generation gets weaker and wiser. Truer words have never been spoken. Our young children sit in front of computers and chat with their pals halfway across the world. However, those same children don't know how to format a letter to that same friend. These same young children are playing video games instead of getting fresh air and sunshine.
     It is safe to say that perhaps the older generation has something to teach us great users of technology. For example, my mother can sit and have coffee and talk face to face with her best friend; and they never once reach for a computer or a cell phone. Notice, I said that they talk not text. While my 10 year old daughter feels as though her world is going to end if she can not stay on the computer for more than her allowed time.
     I think technology is a wonderful thing. I own a smart phone and two laptops. However, I am not sure I want to exist in a world where technology is replacing  people skills. Maybe we should just go a little easier on the older generation. After all, they seem to be our main link to our past.

A Film That Speaks To The Woman That I Am

     Back in December of 2010 my husband and I went to see Tyler Perry's "For Colored Girls." Usually I don't bother seeing anything by Tyler Perry, however, this was the only late movie playing. When I saw the loud crowd that I would be sharing a theater with, I started to get a refund and come back on a nice quiet Tuesday afternoon. I am so glad that I stayed.
     As a poetry lover and a woman, the movie captivated me from the very beginning. First of all, it is based on  the stage play "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow is Enuf" by Ntozake Shange. The poetic approach to the film gave me goosebumps.
     The movie features seven very different women with seven very different problems. Each woman is represented by a different color. These women had to overcome obstacles that may have possibly drove any person to the brink of insanity. For me, these women represented the strength that should lie in all of us. Although I have never been in any of the situations that these women were faced with, however, as a woman, I could easily imagine being in their shoes.
     Many critics argued that the men in this movie were portrayed in a negative manner and perhaps they are correct. My husband definitely left the theater feeling a little disappointed in the film's male roles. However, I felt that the focus was meant to be on the women in the film and their emotional journeys.
     Lastly, there is Tyler Perry's wonderful casting choices. The women that were casted in this movie were excellent in that they were believable in their roles. I wanted to know these strong women. I felt that I could learn from them. The film really spoke to the woman that I am. Not only was my ten dollars well spent but now I also own the movie.        It is easy for someone to keep exposing things that make a community look bad and make money off of it. Tyler Perry's For Colored Girls does just that as it focuses on sensitive issues in the american community and transforms it into a African American issue. It is true that many black women deal with these struggles, but many WOMEN in general deal with these issues also. Tyler Perry is on a platform in which an eclectic audience can see him. Since that is the case, Tyler Perry, be a black man and a prominent member of the black community, exhibits these issues as if they were "black only" issues.  For colored girls, in all actuality, does the complete opposite of what it was intended to do.

SAT: Legalized Cheating

In 1978 I took the SAT and I still remember my fear and trepidation. I was a B and C student.  If I happened to manage an A, it was in band, chorus or drama. I was very smart but I was not challenged or interested in academics.  I was a musician and I had been studying to be an opera singer since I was in the 7th grade.  However, if I was to go to college to study music, I had to take the SAT.  I used to make the joke that I think they gave me points for showing up and signing my name.  My parents were fairly well-off and the colleges I went to readily accepted my parents’ quarterly tuition checks. It really did not have much to do with my grades or SAT score; it had more to do with my parents’ ability to write a check.  I have always thought that the SAT was useless and I think that it is even more so today.
I know some very smart young people who made very good grades through high school take on the extra burden of taking a course to make a better grade on the SAT.  Their parents spent a lot of money on test prep.  The students learned how to pass a test.  They did not learn a great skill.  Murray in his essay states that "The substitution of an achievement test for the SAT will put a spotlight on the quality of the local high school’s curriculum”.  I think it is important for a freshman college student to have knowledge of good old-fashioned reading, writing and arithmetic instead of wasting time learning to legally cheat on a test.  Actually knowing facts about history, math and science and being able to write coherently in the English language is a much more important skill than being taught to take shortcuts to gain your achievements.  If some small but important schools would just start the ball rolling to not require the SAT, but require students to be well rounded and good students, it will make a difference.  There are more important things in life than worrying about a test score.  -- Jane Adamson-Merrill






The SAT was not created in the spirit of making people comfortable. The SAT was created to be a representation of what students learn while in high school. They were created so that colleges can        hold aspiring students to in one standard of learning in the midst of a democratic society.  People are not required to take the SAT, it's purely optional.  Some colleges don't even require SAT. Students should be well prepared for the test that THEY desire to take. There are means out there in which students can study and properly prepare for the SAT.  Not knowing the information needed to pass the standardized test is truly irrelevant to the test and blatantly related to the student who desires , but is unprepared to take the test. Making an argument based off of one's inability to study, concluding that the test is the source of the problem, is utterly fallacious.

Just A Little Bit: Respect, Please

            There was a day when children were taught to say “please” and “thank you”.  They were taught to give their seat to an older person.  There was a day when children would sit at the dinner table and both parents would be present.  Somewhere along the way, a whole generation of children has somehow missed out on someone teaching them a few simple rules.  Rudeness seems to rule the day; not only from the children but from their parents as well. Respect is a forgotten idea.
Last week on Tuesday evening, my husband took me to dinner at a nice restaurant in Fayetteville.  We sat in a booth and we were trying to have a leisurely, quiet dinner, just the two of us.  Just after we were seated, a family of three was seated in the booth behind me – a mother and two little boys who appeared to be about 8 and 10 years old.  They were old enough to know how to behave in public.  At first, I did not really pay attention but as our meal progressed, I had no choice but to pay attention.  The mother was talking on her cell phone and not paying any attention to what her children were doing.  One kept kicking the seat.  The other kept standing in the seat and peering over at me.  My husband, who is very good at giving children the “evil” eye, did not faze them.  When a French fry covered in ketchup landed in my hair, something inside of my snapped. 
I slid out of the seat and flagged down the closest waiter and asked for the manager.  I rounded on the woman who was still blabbing on her cell phone oblivious to what her child had done to me.  I very calmly and very quietly started waving the French fry and said, “Excuse me, but your child just put this French fry in my hair.” 
She said, “Oh, he is not my child” and kept talking into her cell phone saying, “Some lady thinks these kids are mine”.
The rest of the conversation is kind of a blur but I do remember asking if she found the children in the parking lot or if she had kidnapped them.  I did not raise my voice but I was angry and appalled that this woman did not care.
By this time the manager, showed up and was standing their ringing her hands.  Everyone in the restaurant was watching.  My husband was embarrassed.  (He said later that he thought I was going to shove the French fry up the lady’s nose).  The manager gave us our dinner for free.  The woman with the children never admonished the child in her care.  The child did have enough sense to look a little sheepish.  I was not upset with the child; I was upset with the woman.  What is so difficult about teaching a child to be respectful?  What is so difficult about being respectful as an adult?
I did not birth any children but I do have a number of children who are a part of my life.  I have three nieces, one God son, one step son and a plethora of children who belong to my friends and other relations.  These kids all know I am fun and I am the one who will take them to the movies, a ballgame or to White Water.  They also know that I have a rule and they will not be allowed to hang out with me if they choose not to follow the rule.  The rule is to be polite to me, to each other and to anyone we encounter.  My God son wrote his senior English paper about me being the “keeper of the manners”. 
I usually let things roll right off me like water off a duck’s back.  I never get upset with children.  They behave the way they are taught to behave or NOT taught to behave. I usually just ignore people who have no clue.  I have been in plenty of restaurants with screaming children whose parents seem to be totally unaware that their children are causing problems.  Other times, I see children behaving beautiful and interacting with each other and their parents.  However, it seems there are more and more ill-mannered people in general.  The concept of doing unto others as you would have them do unto you seems to be lost on a whole generation.  There seems to be sarcastic remarks instead of a kind word.  It is disheartening to me that respect is going by the way side with so many family values.

It's All About The Parenting


Allow me to began by saying that I am the proud mother of two wonderful daughters. Now, I am not saying that my girls are perfect. However, they know that when they leave home, they represent my husband and myself.(So they better not act a fool.) Having said this, as I read the post above, I too was very disheartened by the astrocious behavior of these two young children in the restaurant. However, I believe that the blame goes directly to the parents.
We live in a world where our children are bombarded with all types of people. It is my responsibilty to provide my children with positive images. When they are exposed to negative images, it is my responsibilty to explain what they have seen or heard is wrong. By the same token, it is my job as a parent to teach my child manners. I don't understand why when a child does something good, we say, "Your parents must be so proud." Yet when they do something bad, we are quick to ask, "Where did you get that behavior from?" Well, I am here to tell you, if you follow a rude child home, 9 times out 10 you will find a rude parent.
I realize that the two boys in the post above were not with their mom. In my opinion, this made the situation even worse. If I can not trust my children to do the right thing when in the presence of an adult, then how will they ever learn to respect authority or even themselves?

Experience This!



            Internships are one of the many ways that students can learn a craft or a work effectively. However, what sets an internship apart from any other method is the level of experience that one acquires when completing an internship. A hands on learning experience is a strong introduction when learning how to do something new. It gives one the opportunity to understand a concept by trial and error versus gathering information that someone else put in a book or an instruction manual.  This creates a realistic perspective and it also gives a student the opportunity to really see if they are truly interested in the field or not.

Can't We Just Get Along

Classifying people by race, color, ethnicity or national origin does not benefit anyone.  It promotes bigotry and racism.  Looking back through history, the monstrous people who have sought to create a master race have caused such tragedy.  Hitler, who was a short, little man, sought to exterminate the Jews and create a master race of tall, blond people.  His stature did not meet his own requirements.  More recently, warring factions in such places as Yugoslavia, Bosnia and Iraq, have attempted to exterminate people of different tribes and religions. 
            If the human race is to ever overcome the bonds of hate, the policies that cause the sorting of people should never exist.  Everyone should just get over it but that is much too easy to say.  After centuries of class distinctions, religious differences and pernicious racism, changing the way people think will not happen overnight.  The government should stop asking the questions that pigeonhole people and that will be a step in getting peoples of all races, religions, colors, ethnicities and national origins to look at each other differently.  Actually, to look at each as the same instead of differently is the ultimate goal.  Our future depends on it.

Celebrating Our Differences

     It would be lovely to live in an utopian society where everyone was created equal. However, we do not. In every part of the world people are being classified by race, color, ethnicity, and national origin. To be totally honest, I do not see the problem with this.
     First of all, while it is true that we are all human, we are very different. We should not be all clumped together in one category. The classifying of people is not wrong. Pretending that we are all the same is wrong. By pretending that everyone is the same, you are essentially ignoring the histories as well as the struggles and accomplishments of different groups of people. It is my belief that all people regardless of race, color, ethnicity, or national origin have contributed to society.
     Secondly, whether we use government policies to classify people or not, classification starts in the mind. We as humans tend to look for things that make us uniquely different. It is my belief that if we were all the same, we would find senseless, idiotic, trivial traits to seperate ourselves. That's who we are as a people.
     I'm not sure that I would be happy in a world where everyone was the same. I prefer to live in a society where the goverment recognizes all classes of people and chooses to celebrate our differences. I feel that this is how we will grow as a nation.

Censorship of Middle School Literature

According to "Literature For Today's Young Adults" by Alleen Pace Nilsen and Kenneth L. Donelson, adolescent literature covers literature for ages ten to eighteen years old. This age span covers many different psychological stages. A ten year old should not be expected to be as mentally stable as an eighteen year old. This is to say that a ten year old in all probability will not be able to fully comprehend a book that was written with an eighteen year old in mind.
     Censorship can be defined as the practice of officially examining books and suppressing unacceptable parts. In the world in which we live, it is only appropriate to want to protect that age bracket in which children are most impressionable. Between the ages of ten and fourteen, chilren are still trying to find their own identities. The sex, drugs, and violence on television and in the media are already causing desensitization in our youth. The school should not only be a place of learning, but it should also be a safe haven from the grittiness of news, television, and even some of the music that they listen to.
     Now this is not to say that all literature books in middle school should be banned. I enjoyed reading classics such as  The Outsiders, Of Mice and Men, and Hamlet. However, I read these books when I was in high school, not middle school. There is a new core curriculum program being adopted in the school system. This program is designed to better prepare our students for college. One way of doing this is by introducing these aforementioned classics along with others just like them to middle school students. As I have mentioned earlier, this is the most impressionable age group that there is. The question that we have to ask ourselves is: Are we, as responsible adults, ready to put books with adult content in the hands of children who just left elementary school?    Tamika R. Huff





      The influence of a child does not solely come from a book that he or she reads regardless their age. Censorship of middle school books does not hinder a child from learning about controversial subjects. School is the perfect venue for students of all ages to be able to learn and discuss important and controversial topics. Children are exposed to many different things at early ages. Sometimes they are exposed to more than we know of. It should be every adults duty to advocate for quality education. Censoring content in the textbooks of middle school student limits that quality of education by limiting that the full level of  honesty within complex subjects.
     Limiting ideas and stopping the flow of information is so very foreign to me.  Every educated person understands the slippery slope that censorship creates, and the harm that it does to both individualism, and society as a whole.  The fact that some churches, such as Christ Community Church of Alamogordo, New Mexico, had an actual book burning in 2002 as a reaction to the release of a Harry Potter book may seem just weird to most people.  But for me the fact that anyone would even suggest such a thing in the 21st century in America is frightening and most alarming.  To know that people actually attended is numbing.
